Uinsure has appointed Tom Doyle as Chief Trading Officer to oversee its insurer partnerships and trading strategy as the firm targets £150 million in gross written premium. For carriers and MGAs, this move signals a deepening of Uinsure’s capacity management capabilities during a period of rapid distribution expansion through major UK banking and mortgage networks.

What was announced

Tom Doyle joined Uinsure this month, bringing more than 28 years of experience in the general insurance sector. He most recently served at Markerstudy Retail, where he managed insurer capacity for one of the largest personal lines portfolios in the UK. His background also includes tenures at AXA Commercial and Ageas Retail, providing him with experience across both the carrier and distribution sides of the market.

In his new capacity as Chief Trading Officer, Doyle is tasked with leading Uinsure’s trading strategy. This includes direct responsibility for managing insurer and capacity relationships, overseeing product development, and monitoring portfolio performance. He will collaborate with the firm’s internal pricing, data, and distribution teams to align insurance propositions with the requirements of customers and capacity providers. The appointment is a response to significant growth; Uinsure has secured 12 new long-term partnerships since the start of 2024, including agreements with prominent building societies and mortgage networks.

The firm’s distribution footprint has expanded significantly this year. NatWest Group went live with Uinsure in July, and the company expects to onboard two of the UK’s top five banks and a major retailer by the end of the year. Furthermore, the insurer panel was recently bolstered by the addition of Lloyds Bank General Insurance, which is exclusive to Uinsure within the mortgage intermediary market. These developments are supported by new Insurance Monitoring technology designed to provide insurers with more opportunities to compete for customers within the Uinsure ecosystem.

"Uinsure has scaled significantly over the last few years, and the opportunity for our insurer partners has naturally grown with it. It's an exciting time to be joining the business, with real scope to deepen our insurer partnerships, using our insight and data assets to create additional value, expand our competitive footprint with more confidence and grow our product suite to serve the evolving needs of our partners and their customers.”

The companies involved

Uinsure is a prominent player in the UK insurtech space, specifically focusing on the mortgage intermediary and banking sectors. The company provides a technology platform that connects insurance carriers with distributors, such as banks and mortgage brokers, to streamline the sale of general insurance products. Its business model rests on three pillars: technology, distribution, and insurer partnerships. Martin Schultheiss serves as the Group Managing Director at Uinsure.

NatWest Group, one of the primary partners mentioned in the recent expansion, is a major UK banking institution that integrated Uinsure's services in mid-2024. Lloyds Bank General Insurance, another key partner, provides capacity through the platform, maintaining an exclusive arrangement in the mortgage intermediary segment. Tom Doyle’s former employer, Markerstudy Retail, represents a significant part of the UK’s personal lines landscape, highlighting the scale of capacity management experience he brings to Uinsure. These partnerships reflect a broader trend of large-scale financial institutions leveraging third-party insurtech platforms to manage their general insurance offerings more efficiently than legacy internal systems might allow.

What this means from an insurtech perspective

This appointment highlights a critical shift for insurtech platforms: the transition from being pure distribution engines to becoming sophisticated capacity orchestrators. By hiring a veteran from Markerstudy Retail, Uinsure is strengthening the "supply side" of its marketplace. For carriers, the value proposition is no longer just access to mortgage brokers, but the ability to deploy capacity into high-volume bank channels like NatWest with granular data insights. This puts pressure on traditional MGAs and legacy brokers who lack the integrated data assets to compete on pricing precision. As Uinsure targets £150m GWP, the industry must watch how embedded insurance models challenge the dominance of standalone personal lines providers through superior distribution efficiency.
