LMA and IUA Launch Joint Healthcare Claims Group to Tackle Complex London Market Risks
By Lauren Towner · 12 October 2026

The Lloyd’s Market Association (LMA) and the International Underwriting Association (IUA) have established the Joint Healthcare Claims Group to unify claims expertise across the London market. For carriers and MGAs, this initiative addresses the volatility of healthcare litigation and regulatory shifts, ensuring that technical claims handling remains robust in an increasingly complex global liability landscape.
What was announced
The LMA and IUA have launched the Joint Healthcare Claims Group, a dedicated forum designed to bring together specialists from both the Lloyd’s and company markets. The group is specifically tasked with addressing the evolving challenges within the healthcare insurance sector, providing a platform for claims practitioners to share technical expertise and discuss emerging risks. This collaborative effort aims to support the London market in maintaining its position as a hub for specialist healthcare coverage by fostering greater alignment between practitioners.
The creation of this group is a direct response to the increasingly intricate environment in which healthcare professionals and their insurers operate. This complexity is driven by shifting legal and regulatory frameworks, alongside changing trends in claims and litigation that can significantly impact loss ratios. By centralising market intelligence, the group intends to facilitate the development of innovative and effective solutions for global healthcare clients.
Leadership for the new body will be shared between the Lloyd’s and company markets. Xanthe Boyle, Chief Claims Officer at Coverys London, and Georgia Billington, Casualty Claims Manager at Dale Underwriting Partners, will serve as co-chairs. Their oversight will focus on encouraging market engagement and promoting the development of best practices across the London insurance market, ensuring that the sector can respond to the specialised needs of a continually evolving class of business.
"Healthcare remains a specialised and continually evolving class of business. By creating a single forum for healthcare claims specialists from across the Lloyd’s and company markets, we can help ensure the London market continues to provide innovative and effective solutions for clients."
Janine Powell, Claims Director at the LMA.
The companies involved
The Lloyd’s Market Association (LMA) represents the interests of the underwriting community within Lloyd’s. It provides professional and technical support to its members, who manage all the underwriting business at Lloyd’s. The association plays a critical role in market governance and the development of standard wordings and clauses. Recent leadership changes at the LMA include the appointment of MS Amlin CEO Christiern Dart to its board, reflecting its ongoing focus on high-level strategic representation for the London market.
The International Underwriting Association (IUA) is the representative body for the London company market, comprising insurance and reinsurance companies operating outside of the Lloyd’s structure. The IUA has recently undergone a period of modernisation, including the unveiling of a new brand identity designed to better support the evolving needs of the London market. Together, the LMA and IUA represent the vast majority of the commercial insurance and reinsurance business conducted in London. Joe Shaw serves as the Director of Claims at the IUA, while Janine Powell holds the position of Claims Director at the LMA, both of whom are instrumental in driving joint initiatives between the two associations.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has closely followed the collaborative efforts between the LMA and IUA to modernise the London market. In August 2026, the two bodies collaborated to launch a new Claims Capability Framework, aimed at boosting talent and standardising skills across the sector. This was followed by the IUA unveiling a new brand identity to modernise its market support functions.
Further leadership shifts in the London market were noted when MS Amlin CEO Christiern Dart was appointed to the LMA board. Additionally, the drive for digitisation within these associations was highlighted by the appointment of Joe Brace to lead the Data Council for the London Market Group, an initiative supported by both the LMA and IUA to advance the market's digital capabilities.
What this means from an insurtech perspective
From an insurance perspective, the formation of this group highlights the urgent need for better data standardisation and collaborative risk assessment in high-stakes sectors like healthcare. For carriers and reinsurers, the ability to share insights on litigation trends is vital for accurate underwriting and pricing. This move puts pressure on incumbent technology vendors to provide platforms that can facilitate this type of cross-market data sharing without compromising proprietary information. As healthcare claims become more complex, the industry must move away from siloed legacy systems toward more integrated, data-driven claims handling. This collaboration is a necessary step toward improving loss ratios and maintaining customer trust in a volatile regulatory environment.
