Howden Appoints Elliot Richardson as Group Chief Commercial Officer to Drive Global Strategy
By Lauren Towner · 12 October 2026

Howden has appointed Elliot Richardson as Chief Commercial Officer to spearhead a new global commercial strategy focused on integrating its broking, reinsurance, and underwriting capabilities. This move signals a shift toward data-driven placement and unified carrier relationships, directly impacting how the intermediary manages its global platform and interacts with its insurance partners.
What was announced
The appointment of Elliot Richardson as Chief Commercial Officer for the Group is effective immediately. In this new role, Richardson will report to David Howden, Founder and CEO, while joining the Group Executive Committee. He will also maintain his current position as Executive Chair of Howden Re. This leadership change is central to a new commercial strategy designed to unify Howden’s diverse global platform, which spans broking, reinsurance, underwriting, and employee benefits.
Key priorities of the strategy include deepening internal collaboration and enhancing carrier partnerships to improve client outcomes. This involves the growth of facilities and the development of new products to optimise placements. A significant component of this shift is the integration of technology; Howden will utilise enhanced CRM and AI-powered data solutions to provide placement insights and refine its sales culture. Structurally, Howden Markets—which leads the Group’s relationships with its global carrier partners—and Group Placement will now report directly to Richardson.
Richardson is tasked with aligning this commercial strategy with the Group’s broader transformation, working alongside Group CFO Susan Panuccio and Group COO David Shalders. A new Commercial Leadership Team, comprising senior figures from various regions and specialty businesses, will support these efforts. Richardson brings 38 years of market experience to the role, having joined the firm in 2015 via the RKH acquisition and previously helping grow Howden Re into a business with more than $800 million in revenue.
"We have now built the full range of geographies and capabilities to become a truly global broker, and the opportunity in front of us is to deploy all of those tools for our clients. That means building a more consistent, scalable, world-class business – one that helps our people collaborate more easily, delivers better outcomes for clients and markets, and unlocks the full potential of the Group, while preserving the entrepreneurial, empowered and employee-owned culture that makes us different. Our new commercial strategy, and Elliot’s leadership of it, is central to that. Elliot has played a vital role in building Howden Re into one of the world’s leading reinsurance businesses, and I know he will bring the same energy, judgement and commercial instinct to this role."

The companies involved
Howden is a global insurance intermediary group that operates as an independent, employee-owned entity. Founded by David Howden, the firm has expanded significantly through both organic growth and strategic acquisitions, such as the 2015 purchase of RKH and the more recent acquisition of Tiger Risk. The group positions itself as a major alternative to the largest global broking houses, maintaining an entrepreneurial culture while operating across a vast international footprint that includes specialty insurance, reinsurance, and employee benefits.
Howden Re serves as the group’s specialist reinsurance arm. Under the leadership of CEO Tim Ronda and Executive Chair Elliot Richardson, it has become one of only four tier-one global reinsurance brokers. The division focuses on providing sophisticated risk transfer solutions and capital market access. By integrating Howden Re’s expertise more closely with the group’s primary broking and underwriting arms, the parent company aims to leverage its $800 million-plus revenue reinsurance business to drive broader commercial success across its entire global network.

FF News has closely followed Howden’s expansion and its research into emerging risks. What this means from an insurtech perspective
This move signals a critical evolution for global intermediaries: the transition from a collection of regional offices to a unified, data-first platform. By placing AI-powered CRM and placement insights at the heart of its commercial strategy, Howden is challenging incumbent carriers and brokers to move beyond legacy relationship-based models toward more analytical, facility-driven distribution. This puts pressure on traditional MGAs and smaller brokers who may lack the scale to compete with such integrated data ecosystems. For the wider industry, it suggests that the future of "tier one" status depends as much on internal data liquidity and cross-selling efficiency as it does on geographic footprint.
