Lemonade Expands Autonomous Car Insurance to Older Tesla Models with FSD v14 Lite Support
By Lauren Towner · 8 October 2026

Lemonade’s expansion of its Autonomous Car insurance to include older Tesla hardware marks a significant shift in how carriers quantify software-driven risk. By leveraging real-time telematics through Tesla’s Fleet API, the insurer is moving beyond static safety discounts toward a dynamic underwriting model that distinguishes between human-driven and machine-supervised miles.
What was announced
Lemonade has extended its specialized insurance product for autonomous driving to Tesla vehicles equipped with HW3 (Hardware 3) running the new FSD (Supervised) v14 Lite software. This update specifically targets drivers in Arizona, Colorado, and Tennessee. Under the new pricing structure, Tesla owners using the v14 Lite software on older hardware can receive a 30% discount on miles driven while Full Self-Driving (FSD) is engaged. This joins the existing offering for newer vehicles equipped with HW4 and FSD v14.2 or later, which provides a 50% discount on those specific miles.
The technology behind this expansion, FSD Lite, is an adaptation of Tesla's latest v14 software designed for the previous-generation onboard computer. The build is intended to bring the proactive and reactive responsiveness of newer AI configurations to the camera and AI3 hardware setup. To facilitate this, Lemonade utilizes the Tesla Fleet API. With customer permission, the insurer accesses granular vehicle data to accurately identify when the software is in control versus the human driver. This allows for precise pricing that reflects the lower risk profile associated with autonomous supervision. Beyond the autonomous-specific savings, Tesla owners in the three launch states can further reduce premiums by bundling the car policy with Lemonade’s other lines, including Renters, Pet, or Home insurance.
"Tesla has done something remarkable with v14 Lite by taking the intelligence from its newest hardware and making it available to owners of older Teslas," said Shai Wininger, President and Co-Founder of Lemonade. "We're excited to launch our support for the new FSD Lite with three states today, and more coming soon."

The companies involved
Lemonade, listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker LMND, is a digital insurance company that utilizes artificial intelligence and behavioral economics to offer a range of products including renters, homeowners, car, pet, and term life insurance. Since its inception, the company has positioned itself as a technology-first carrier, often bypassing traditional broker networks in favor of a direct-to-consumer digital interface. Its car insurance product is a relatively recent addition to its portfolio, designed to integrate deeply with vehicle telematics and OEM data.
Tesla, the electric vehicle and clean energy giant, has become a pivotal player in the insurance space, both as an OEM and a data provider. The company’s hardware iterations, specifically the transition from HW3 to the more advanced HW4, have created a fragmented risk landscape for insurers. By opening its Fleet API to third-party carriers like Lemonade, Tesla enables a level of data transparency that traditional internal combustion engine vehicles rarely offer. This relationship allows for the creation of connected insurance products that can adjust pricing based on the specific version of the vehicle's operating software and hardware configuration.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has closely followed Lemonade’s aggressive geographic and product expansion over the last year. In October 2026, the publication reported on the company’s move into the Pacific with Lemonade Expands AI-Powered Renters Insurance to Hawaii with Rates Starting at $5. This followed a similar expansion to the north, detailed in Lemonade Expands Renters Insurance to Alaska: AI-Driven Coverage for $5 a Month.
Beyond renters insurance, Lemonade has also been scaling its niche lines. FF News covered the rollout of its animal health products in Lemonade Expands AI-Powered Pet Insurance to Kentucky: Instant Claims Now Live for Bluegrass State Pet Parents. Additionally, the broader market interest in Tesla-specific coverage was highlighted in the report Shory Partners with EVS and Al Wathba to Launch Exclusive Tesla Insurance in UAE, demonstrating that the appetite for OEM-integrated insurance is a global trend.
What this means from an insurtech perspective
This development highlights a growing divide in the motor insurance market between legacy carriers and data-integrated insurtechs. While traditional insurers often struggle to account for the safety benefits of specific software versions, Lemonade is treating software updates as actuarial events. This puts significant pressure on incumbent vendors and carriers who rely on historical loss data rather than real-time API feeds. The move raises critical questions for the reinsurance sector regarding how to model the risk of "Lite" software versions versus full-spec hardware. Ultimately, it shifts the focus of underwriting from the driver’s demographics to the vehicle’s computational capabilities and active software state.
