Sun Life Financial Inc. has released global research highlighting a significant "preparedness gap" in health and financial planning across eight major markets. For insurance professionals, this data underscores a growing demand for integrated protection products that bridge the divide between health insurance and wealth management, as customers struggle with increasing complexity in personal risk management.

What was announced

Sun Life surveyed adults aged 18 and over across eight key markets: Canada, the United States, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. The findings reveal a significant "preparedness gap" where consumer intentions do not match their actual coverage. While 61% of respondents believe protecting against the costs of an unexpected illness or accident is very important, only 33% have a full plan in place. A similar trend appears in family security, where 60% view it as very important, but only 31% have secured their family's future with a plan.

The research was released alongside a global brand refresh, including a modernized logo and the tagline "Making life brighter." This evolution responds to the 65% of people who want integrated support across health, finances, and protection. Managing these needs has become increasingly difficult; 52% of those surveyed say managing finances is more complicated than it was five years ago, and 51% say the same for health.

The study also highlighted a cross-country average of 61% who agree that health management affects their financial situation, while 59% say finances impact their health. Retirement and caregiving remain major points of vulnerability. Only 27% of respondents have a plan for caregiving despite 57% valuing it, and while 56% prioritize retirement planning, only 31% have a full plan. Furthermore, 75% of respondents stated that access to trustworthy financial planning advice would increase their confidence.

The companies involved

Sun Life Financial Inc. is a global financial services provider listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX: SLF) and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: SLF). The organization specializes in asset management, wealth, and protection solutions across North America and Asia. In the United Kingdom, the SunLife brand is part of the Phoenix Group, which is the UK’s largest long-term savings and retirement business. This relationship allows the brand to operate with the backing of a major retirement specialist while maintaining its focus on consumer protection and savings.

The company’s leadership includes Kevin Strain, who serves as President and CEO, and Chris Hewitt, the Senior Vice-President, Global Chief Client Experience and Marketing Officer. The firm’s recent strategic focus, as indicated by the brand refresh, centers on connecting its strengths in digital experiences and trusted advice to simplify the consumer journey. By operating in diverse markets such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines, the company maintains a broad perspective on global health and financial security trends.

What this means from an insurtech perspective

From an insurance perspective, this research highlights a massive distribution opportunity for carriers and MGAs capable of delivering "embedded health-wealth" solutions. The data suggests that the traditional separation of life, health, and wealth products is failing the consumer, creating a "complexity tax" that prevents action. For insurtech vendors, the pressure is now on to provide unified platforms that can ingest data across these silos to offer holistic advice. Those sticking to single-line digital distribution may find themselves marginalized by integrated platforms that address the 65% of customers demanding a connected view of their protection and financial health. This shift places a premium on legacy core-system modernization to enable the cross-product data sharing required for such integrated offerings.
