Manchester-based insurtech Fruga has secured £1m in funding to scale its open banking platform, which aims to disrupt the traditional annual renewal cycle. By allowing carriers and MGAs to offer year-round rewards and gather real-time transactional data, the technology provides a mechanism to reduce churn and improve underwriting accuracy through deeper behavioral insights.

What was announced

Fruga has raised £1m in a funding round led by NPIF II – PXN Equity Finance, managed by PXN Ventures as part of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II, alongside participation from venture capital firm Haatch. The investment is earmarked for scaling Fruga’s open banking technology, which allows insurance customers to link their bank or payment cards directly to their policies.

The platform operates by rewarding policyholders with "insurance credits" when they spend with selected partners, including supermarkets, travel brands, and high street retailers. These credits accumulate throughout the policy lifecycle to provide a discount at the point of renewal, which the company states often exceeds £150. One business already utilizing this technology is Money Expert, which has integrated the rewards system to help its customers offset the cost of insurance premiums.

For insurance providers, the technology can be white-labeled and embedded under their own branding. This enables insurers to move beyond the traditional "once-a-year" interaction at renewal or claim. By accessing transactional data, insurers can identify life events in real-time; for instance, detecting pet-related purchases allows a carrier to offer pet insurance proactively before a customer begins searching on a price comparison website. Following the investment, Fruga plans to expand its team with key hires scheduled for Q1 2027 and is currently working through a pipeline of household insurers and managing general agents.

"Insurers hold some of the biggest customer bases in the country, yet the industry has trained those customers to see their policy as a price and nothing more. Every renewal sends them back to the comparison sites, and the insurer that wins them this year loses them the next. We started Fruga to take customers out of that aggregator cycle and put real value back at the heart of the relationship. Customer value and data insights is what makes that possible."

The companies involved

Fruga is a Manchester-based insurtech scaleup founded by Ross McCarthy and Asaf. The company was bootstrapped prior to this funding round and focuses on bringing the continuous value and data-driven engagement seen in neobanking to the insurance sector. Its core proposition is built on the "data layer" that connects consumer spending habits to insurance policy management.

PXN Ventures is an investment firm that manages the NPIF II – PXN Equity Finance fund. The Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II (NPIF II) is an initiative of the British Business Bank, designed to support high-growth businesses and boost productivity across the North of England as part of the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy. Haatch is a UK venture capital firm that provides capital and hands-on support to early-stage founders. Money Expert, a partner of Fruga, is a financial services and comparison platform focused on reducing household expenses for UK consumers.

What FF News has reported before

PXN Ventures has previously been active in supporting platforms that leverage advanced data and automation to improve financial services oversight. FF News reported on their involvement when Aveni Secures £12m to Launch AI Agent Assurance Platform for Financial Services. That investment highlighted a broader industry trend toward using sophisticated data layers to enhance customer outcomes and regulatory compliance, a theme that continues with Fruga’s focus on open banking for insurance retention.

What this means from an insurtech perspective

This announcement highlights a strategic shift from reactive to proactive insurance distribution. For carriers and MGAs, the primary threat remains the "aggregator cycle," where customer loyalty is minimal and price is the only differentiator. By leveraging open banking, insurers can finally access the behavioral data required to compete with embedded finance players. However, this puts significant pressure on legacy core systems to integrate real-time transactional feeds. The success of this model depends on whether customers trust insurers with bank-level data access in exchange for discounts—a hurdle that has historically slowed open banking adoption in the UK insurance sector compared to the banking industry.
