The insurance distribution landscape is facing a fundamental shift as Large Language Models (LLMs) begin to influence consumer decisions before they reach traditional comparison platforms. A recent industry roundtable has highlighted how AI-driven research is accelerating the customer journey while potentially creating a dangerous gap between perceived and actual product understanding for complex protection policies.

What was announced

Future Finance, AI Wales, and FinTech Wales convened a roundtable on September 22nd as part of the Future Finance Innovation Lab sprints. The session specifically addressed how the insurance ecosystem must adapt to changing consumer behaviours, particularly in the life insurance and income protection sectors. The discussion was framed by the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) Mills Review, which indicated that 20% of UK adults are already comfortable with AI making financial decisions on their behalf.

The roundtable brought together a cross-section of the industry, including representatives from major aggregators Go.Compare and Confused.com, the broker Howden Insurance, and firms such as Wealthify, Acuity Law, and Taught by Humans. A primary concern raised was that while AI tools can streamline the research process, they often rely on general-purpose models not calibrated for specific regulatory environments. This lack of transparency regarding training data means insurers have little visibility over the information influencing a prospect’s choice.

The findings suggest that while price comparison websites remain a staple, AI is accelerating the journey, often giving users an inflated sense of confidence in their understanding of complex financial products. These insights will now inform a hackathon scheduled for October 20th, titled "Can AI Give Better Insurance Answers?", which aims to develop solutions for providing more accurate and trustworthy information via AI tools.

"AI is changing how consumers discover, compare and engage with financial products, creating both opportunities and challenges for the insurance sector. We know these are questions and issues that our community is grappling with, so it makes sense to bring together the fantastic expertise we have to explore these changes from multiple perspectives and better understand how customer expectations are evolving."

What this means from an insurtech perspective

From an insurtech perspective, the shift toward "pre-comparison" research via LLMs represents a significant threat to traditional lead generation and disclosure standards. For carriers and MGAs, the risk is twofold: misinformed customers purchasing unsuitable life or income protection products, leading to future claims disputes, and the erosion of the broker’s role as a primary educator. If general-purpose AI models become the de facto gatekeepers of insurance information, incumbent vendors must rapidly develop verified data feeds to ensure LLMs are surfacing accurate policy details. Failure to do so could see loss ratios climb as consumers bypass professional advice for the convenience of automated, yet potentially flawed, AI recommendations.
