Sapiens has launched the Sapiens Insurance AI Maturity Index, a comprehensive study revealing that 67% of insurance professionals expect AI to become fully autonomous within three years. For fintech leaders, this highlights a critical shift from simple automation toward agentic AI, marking a widening divide between "Autonomous Leaders" and firms struggling with data strategy and governance.

What was announced

Launched at the Sapiens Ignite 2026 conference, the Sapiens Insurance AI Maturity Index is an international study conducted by Research in Finance. The index evaluates senior insurance professionals to benchmark the current state of AI adoption and provides a framework for insurers to plot their progression from basic automation to agentic AI. The study categorises insurers into four distinct maturity levels: Reactive, Enabled, Operational, and Autonomous. These rankings are determined by scoring firms across four critical pillars: cloud adoption, master data strategy, AI governance policy, and HR strategy.

The findings reveal significant geographical and sectoral disparities. Benelux and the Nordics lead the transition, with 33% and 28% of insurers respectively classified as Autonomous Leaders. In contrast, the US (25%), UK (23%), and South Africa (18%) are lagging. From a sectoral perspective, 30% of Property and Casualty (P&C) insurers have reached the Autonomous stage, outperforming Life insurers at 25%. Scale also plays a role, as 39% of global insurers with more than 20,000 employees are ranked as leaders.

While 61% of insurers view AI as a core business strategy, the path to full autonomy remains complex. Among current users of agentic AI, 86% express confidence in the technology's decisions, yet 53% of the work produced by these tools is still checked by a human. Furthermore, an average of 15% of AI-generated decisions are currently overridden by human operators. For those in the "Reactive" category, the primary obstacles cited are lack of governance, insufficient skills development, and poor data strategies.

"The Sapiens Insurance AI Maturity Index highlights a clear, industry-wide imperative for AI and agentic AI adoption, though insurers must accelerate their timelines or risk being left behind. We see firsthand what is possible when these technologies are deployed at scale, particularly with agentic AI. By implementing the right strategies today, insurers can leverage AI not just as a tool, but as a catalyst to build deeper customer trust, launch products faster, and deliver superior digital user experiences."

The companies involved

Sapiens International Corporation N.V., commonly referred to as Sapiens, is a global provider of software solutions for the insurance industry. The company provides core, data, and digital platforms for the Property & Casualty, Life, Pension, and Annuity markets. Sapiens focuses on enabling insurers to modernize their legacy systems and transition toward digital-first operations. Its suite of products is designed to handle complex regulatory environments and high-volume processing across multiple geographies.

The company has increasingly positioned itself as a facilitator of AI-driven transformation within the insurtech ecosystem. By providing the underlying infrastructure for policy administration, billing, and claims, Sapiens occupies a central role in the digital architecture of major global insurers. The firm’s market presence is characterized by its focus on "insurance-native" technology, aiming to reduce the friction associated with general-purpose AI tools by tailoring them to the specific risk and compliance requirements of the insurance sector. Sapiens operates internationally, with a significant footprint in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed Sapiens' pivot toward advanced intelligence and agentic systems throughout 2026. In October, the publication covered the launch of Sapiens Brain: The New Insurance-Native AI Foundation Eliminating Hallucinations, a tool designed to provide a reliable foundation for AI-driven insurance processes. This followed a major internal restructuring in June, when Sapiens Appointed New C-Suite Leaders to Drive Global Agentic AI Transformation, signaling a top-down commitment to the technology. Earlier in the year, the company’s decision-making technology gained industry recognition, as Sapiens Decision was Recognised as a “Luminary” by Everest Group for its ability to drive AI-powered business decisions at scale.

What this means

The Index highlights a growing "maturity gap" that could soon dictate market competitiveness. While the industry is optimistic about autonomy, the fact that over half of agentic AI outputs require human verification suggests that "agentic" systems are currently functioning more as advanced co-pilots than independent actors. The UK’s position as the lowest-ranking geography for adoption readiness is a significant concern for the London market, suggesting that regulatory caution or legacy debt may be stifling progress compared to the Nordics. For the wider sector, the pressure is no longer just about adopting AI, but about fixing the underlying data governance and talent shortages that prevent "Reactive" firms from moving up the maturity scale.
