Portage Mutual Insurance Taps Kimputing for AI-Driven Guidewire Cloud Readiness
By Lauren Towner · 27 October 2026

Portage Mutual Insurance has adopted Kimputing’s CenterTest automation software to streamline its transition to Guidewire Cloud. For carriers managing complex core-system migrations, the move highlights the growing necessity of automating regression testing across policy, billing, and claims modules to maintain operational stability and reduce manual overhead during high-stakes digital transformations.
What was announced
Portage Mutual is implementing CenterTest as part of an internal quality transformation. The software will provide end-to-end test automation for the insurer’s full Guidewire InsuranceSuite and portal environment, which includes Guidewire PolicyCenter, BillingCenter, ClaimCenter, and ProducerEngage. A primary driver for the adoption is Portage Mutual’s upcoming migration to Guidewire Cloud. Because CenterTest is designed to maintain version compatibility across different Guidewire releases, the insurer aims to have its automated test suite functional for the cloud environment from the first day of the transition.
The project is being led by Kimputing with support from two strategic partners. Exavalu is providing embedded Software Development Engineers in Test (SDET) resources to assist with the implementation. Meanwhile, MutualCore, Kimputing’s strategic consulting partner for the Canadian market, introduced the solution to Portage Mutual and is providing ongoing engagement oversight. By automating these processes, the insurer intends to validate system performance from the end-user perspective, ensuring that updates and cloud-native features do not disrupt existing workflows for brokers or internal staff.
"CenterTest is a key component of our quality transformation strategy and an important investment as we prepare for our Guidewire Cloud migration. By automating end-to-end testing across our core insurance applications, we can improve release quality, reduce manual effort, and allow our teams to focus more of their time on delivering value to the business and our broker partners. CenterTest enables us to validate the system the way our users experience it, providing greater confidence in every release."

The companies involved
Portage Mutual Insurance is a Canadian mutual property and casualty insurer with a history of providing coverage through a dedicated broker network. As a mutual company, it is owned by its policyholders, a structure that typically influences its long-term technology investment strategies toward stability and service reliability. The company operates across various Canadian provinces, managing a diverse portfolio of personal and commercial insurance products.
Kimputing Inc. is a specialized technology provider focused on the Guidewire ecosystem. Its flagship product, CenterTest, is built specifically to handle the complexities of Guidewire InsuranceSuite, addressing the specific testing requirements of carriers using PolicyCenter, BillingCenter, and ClaimCenter. The firm positions itself as a bridge for insurers moving from on-premise legacy setups to cloud-based environments. By focusing on version-agnostic testing, Kimputing serves a niche but critical role for carriers that rely on Guidewire as their core operational backbone and need to maintain continuity during frequent software update cycles.
What FF News has reported before
Portage Mutual has been active in modernizing its technology stack beyond its core systems. FF News previously covered the insurer's efforts to enhance its actuarial capabilities in the report Portage Mutual Taps Akur8 to Modernize P&C Insurance Pricing Across Canada. That partnership focused on utilizing AI-driven platforms to improve the speed and accuracy of the insurer’s pricing models across the Canadian market. This latest move into automated testing suggests a broader strategy by Portage Mutual to eliminate technical debt and adopt more agile, cloud-ready infrastructure across both its underwriting and core administrative functions.
What this means from an insurtech perspective
This announcement underscores the significant "migration tax" carriers face when moving to Guidewire Cloud. For many incumbents, the bottleneck isn't the cloud infrastructure itself, but the massive regression testing debt accumulated over years of on-premise customizations. By investing in automation before the migration, Portage Mutual is attempting to de-risk the transition, a move that puts pressure on traditional manual-heavy QA consultancies. From a broader perspective, this highlights a shift in the vendor ecosystem: as core systems consolidate, specialized "accelerator" vendors like Kimputing become essential for carriers to realize the ROI of expensive cloud migrations without blowing out project timelines or compromising claim processing integrity.
