Press Release: Firelight Integrates with Kraken DeFi Earn to Provide Built-in Protection for USDC Vaults | Featured Image by FF News

Firelight has integrated its onchain cover-enablement protocol with Kraken’s Protected Strategies USDC vault, embedding protection directly into a DeFi product with over $800 million in deposits. For insurance professionals, this represents a shift toward automated, transparent risk mitigation that bypasses traditional claims adjustment in favor of independent, onchain validation for technical failures.

What was announced

Kraken Protected Strategies USDC, formerly known as Boosted USDC, now features built-in protection against smart contract exploits, oracle failures, and redemption failures. The integration utilizes Veda’s infrastructure and is curated by Sentora. Firelight’s approach differs from traditional indemnity by registering coverage terms onchain before they take effect. These terms are reset every 30 days in "epochs" to reflect the vault's live risk profile and composition.

The protection mechanism is supported by capital held outside the protocols it covers, ensuring that a failure in the underlying DeFi venue does not deplete the funds reserved for payouts. Payouts are triggered by an independent process: security partner ZeroShadow provides a report on any failure event, which is then verified by the Firelight Risk Consortium. This consortium includes five firms: GFX Labs, Hypernative, Credora, Native, and Cyfrin. This structure aims to remove the conflict of interest inherent in self-adjudicated claims. The Kraken DeFi Earn program currently manages significant volume, with USDC representing nearly half of the capital in curated DeFi vaults across the broader market.

"Every mature financial system has a way to absorb failure, and onchain yield has reached a point where protection needs to be built into the product, not treated as an afterthought. Audits reduce risk, but they don't make users whole when something breaks. Since going live on October 6, Firelight has shown that cover with clear terms and independent review can sit underneath a product without changing how it operates. Bringing that to Kraken, one of the industry's largest platforms, is the natural next step,"

The companies involved

Kraken is one of the world’s most established digital asset exchanges, operated by Payward Inc. The company has recently focused on institutional expansion and regulatory compliance, securing approvals in various jurisdictions to bridge the gap between traditional finance and decentralized protocols. Its DeFi Earn product serves as a gateway for users to access onchain yields through curated vaults, which have now surpassed $800 million in total deposits.

Firelight is a specialized protocol designed for onchain cover enablement, focusing on providing a transparent layer of protection for DeFi strategies. Unlike traditional insurers, Firelight operates as a protocol that allows vault operators to "switch on" protection. The firm relies on a decentralized network of risk and security partners to maintain its infrastructure. This includes real-time monitoring through Hypernative and institutional risk management via Sentora. By utilizing Veda’s infrastructure, Firelight’s model is designed to be scalable across other exchanges and fintech platforms that require verifiable, onchain risk mitigation for their digital asset products.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked Kraken’s global expansion and institutional pivot. Recently, we covered how Kraken Parent Payward Secures VARA Approval for Full UAE Launch in Dubai, signaling a push into regulated Middle Eastern markets. We also reported on the exchange's infrastructure developments, such as when Payward and Singapore Gulf Bank Launch 24/7 Institutional Digital Asset Settlement. Additionally, the broader context of the DeFi market was highlighted in our report on how Sentora Data Debunks DeFi 'Hot Money' Myth as Onchain Yield Proves Durable, which aligns with the growing maturity of the vault products Kraken is now protecting with Firelight.

What this means from an insurtech perspective

This integration highlights a critical evolution in embedded insurance: the transition from discretionary cover to programmatic, verifiable protection. By using an independent consortium for claims validation rather than a traditional loss adjuster, Firelight is challenging the standard insurance value chain. For carriers and MGAs, this signals that technical risks in DeFi are becoming quantifiable enough to be "wrapped" into products at the point of sale. The pressure is now on incumbent specialty insurers to develop similar real-time, epoch-based pricing models or risk losing the digital asset protection market to decentralized protocols that offer higher transparency and faster settlement.
