Press Release: BankDhofar Reimagines Motor Insurance as a Lifestyle Protection and Assistance Package | Featured Image by FF News

BankDhofar is repositioning motor insurance in Oman by shifting from a mandatory compliance product to a service-led assistance model. For carriers and bancassurance partners, this move highlights a growing trend of bundling lifestyle protections—such as mobile phone and handbag cover—with traditional vehicle risk to drive customer retention and differentiate in a price-sensitive market.

What was announced

BankDhofar’s updated motor insurance proposition, issued by Dhofar Insurance Company, utilizes a bancassurance model to integrate insurance directly into the banking relationship. The offering is structured into several tiers: basic compulsory third-party cover, comprehensive insurance, and three enhanced options—Third Party Plus, Comprehensive Elite, and Comprehensive Elite Plus.

The higher-tier policies provide coverage for a wide range of risks, including collision, fire, theft, vandalism, and natural disasters such as storms and floods. Specific enhancements include UAE extensions, repairs at authorized agencies, and zero-deductible treatment for windscreen damage. A core component of the strategy is the inclusion of 24/7 roadside assistance, covering towing, battery problems, and mechanical breakdowns.

A significant element of the announcement is "Laha," a specialized motor insurance solution for women launched in 2025. Laha moves beyond vehicle-centric risk by offering protection for personal items, including up to OMR 200 for mobile phone damage and coverage for handbags and child seats. It also features medical emergency ambulance assistance and a towing benefit of up to 100 kilometers or OMR 55 compensation in lieu of service. The bank is emphasizing convenience through instant policy issuance and 24/7 customer service support, aiming to transform the product from a basic financial safeguard into a comprehensive protection package.

The companies involved

BankDhofar is one of the leading financial institutions in the Sultanate of Oman, providing a range of retail, corporate, and investment banking services. Its bancassurance strategy relies on deep integration with local insurance providers to offer protection products to its existing customer base, leveraging its branch network to provide financial services alongside traditional banking.

Dhofar Insurance Company, the underwriter for these motor policies, is a prominent player in the Omani insurance market. The company provides a broad spectrum of general and life insurance products and has previously engaged in digital distribution partnerships to expand its reach through third-party platforms. Together, the two entities utilize BankDhofar’s digital infrastructure to streamline the insurance purchasing process. This partnership reflects a broader market trend in the region where established banks act as the primary distribution channel for insurance products, moving away from traditional standalone brokerage models toward a more holistic financial services approach for the end consumer.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has followed BankDhofar’s expansion into specialized financial products across various sectors in Oman. The bank recently focused on digital transformation and niche demographics, as seen in the report BankDhofar Launches Youth Account to Drive Financial Literacy for Young Adults in Oman. Its corporate and SME capabilities were also highlighted in BankDhofar Introduces Neo Corporate Internet Banking and BankDhofar and Mastercard Launch Specialized SME Business Cards to Drive Growth in Oman.

Additionally, Dhofar Insurance’s activity in the digital ecosystem was previously noted in Khedmah Introduces In-App Medical Insurance Services in Partnership With Dhofar Insurance, which detailed the company's efforts to embed medical insurance within third-party lifestyle applications.

What this means from an insurtech perspective

From an insurtech perspective, this announcement reflects the industry’s shift toward "embedded assistance" rather than just "embedded insurance." By bundling non-traditional risks like mobile phone damage and handbag theft into a motor policy, BankDhofar and Dhofar Insurance are attempting to increase the perceived value of a product often viewed as a "grudge purchase." This puts pressure on traditional brokers who rely solely on price comparison. For carriers, the challenge lies in underwriting these disparate risks within a single policy framework without inflating loss ratios. The success of this model depends on whether the convenience of a "one-stop-shop" can outweigh the specialized focus of standalone insurers in the Omani market.
