Bupa Arabia Invests SAR 84 Million to Provide Health Insurance for Saudi Orphans
By Lauren Towner · 29 October 2026

Bupa Arabia has reached a SAR 84 million investment milestone in its dedicated health insurance programme for orphans, highlighting the role of specialised micro-insurance and corporate social responsibility in the Saudi market. For carriers and MGAs, the initiative demonstrates how high-limit coverage can be managed efficiently through dedicated contact centres and streamlined pre-authorisation workflows.
What was announced
Bupa Arabia for Cooperative Insurance Company revealed that its orphan health insurance programme has issued more than 34,000 policies since its inception in 2011. The programme, which currently serves between 2,000 and 3,000 orphans annually, was showcased at the Global CSR Forum 2026 in Riyadh. What began 15 years ago with coverage for 18 children has expanded to a nationwide operation involving 25 orphan care centres across 12 cities in Saudi Arabia. The coverage adheres to the standard health insurance policy approved by the Insurance Authority, providing an annual limit of up to SAR 500,000 per beneficiary.
In 2025 alone, the programme settled 22,985 medical claims totaling SAR 11.5 million. Operational efficiency is a key metric; the company reported responding to 91% of pre-authorisation requests within ten minutes. Of the 11,911 pre-authorisation requests processed in 2025, 78.6% were approved based on medical evidence. Beyond standard limits, the programme includes a mechanism for exceptional approvals, which has funded specialised treatments such as prosthetic limbs, finger implants, and reconstructive surgeries. Beneficiaries also have access to a Key Accounts Contact Centre to expedite claims. Additionally, the company established a Waqf through the Ehsan platform in 2025, matching employee donations to charitable causes.
"Corporate social responsibility is not limited to launching initiatives or providing support. It is about fulfilling commitments and turning them into sustainable, measurable impact. Over the past 15 years, we have remained committed to providing health coverage for orphans, driven by our belief in the importance of continuity of care and ensuring that it reaches those who need it most."

The companies involved
Bupa Arabia for Cooperative Insurance Company is a major player in the Saudi Arabian insurance market, specialising in health insurance products. The company operates within the regulatory framework of the Insurance Authority, the Kingdom’s dedicated insurance regulator. The orphan health programme is executed in close collaboration with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, which oversees social welfare and labour policies in Saudi Arabia. The partnership leverages the Ministry’s network of care centres to identify and register beneficiaries. This structure allows the company to align its corporate social responsibility with national developmental goals, focusing on vulnerable populations while maintaining the operational standards of a commercial carrier. The involvement of the Insurance Authority ensures that the specialised policies provided to orphans meet the same rigorous standards as commercial health products in the Kingdom. By integrating its core expertise in health underwriting and claims management with social initiatives, Bupa Arabia positions itself as a key contributor to the Kingdom's social safety net, bridging the gap between private sector efficiency and public sector welfare needs.

This regional focus underscores the Kingdom's efforts to integrate financial services with broader social and economic development goals, reflecting a market that is increasingly prioritising both digital innovation and social impact.
What this means from an insurtech perspective
This initiative highlights the critical intersection of social impact and operational efficiency in health insurance. For the broader insurtech sector, Bupa Arabia’s ability to process 91% of requests within ten minutes sets a high bar for claims automation and pre-authorisation workflows. It demonstrates that high-limit, complex medical cases can be managed at scale without sacrificing speed. However, the reliance on "exceptional approvals" for prosthetic and reconstructive needs suggests that standard policy frameworks still struggle to accommodate specialised medical technologies. This creates an opening for MGAs and tech vendors to develop more flexible, modular riders that can be integrated into social-focused insurance products, potentially improving loss ratios by reducing the administrative burden of manual reviews while strengthening customer trust through more inclusive underwriting.
