By Lauren Towner · 26 October 2026

AIA Group has appointed Edward Moncreiffe as Regional Chief Executive for India, Sri Lanka, Australia, and New Zealand, effective 2 November 2026. This high-level transition from HSBC underscores a strategic focus on cross-border leadership and wealth-insurance integration, signaling a period of aggressive growth and market consolidation across key Asia-Pacific territories for the life insurance giant.
What was announced
Moncreiffe will take over responsibility for four major markets: India, Sri Lanka, Australia, and New Zealand. He will also join the Group Executive Committee, reporting directly to Lee Yuan Siong, AIA’s Group Chief Executive and President. Moncreiffe brings two decades of experience in the UK, Europe, Latin America, and Asia. His most recent role was Chief Executive Officer, Insurance at HSBC Group, where he managed life and health operations across Hong Kong, Macau, Mainland China, Singapore, India, Malta, Bermuda, and Mexico. His background is heavily rooted in insurance distribution and wealth strategy.
He is a Chartered Insurer and holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. The appointment is set for a future start date of 2 November 2026, suggesting a long-term succession or transition plan within AIA’s regional leadership structure. Beyond his corporate roles, Moncreiffe is the former Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers, Matilda International Hospital, and City Mental Health Alliance Hong Kong. He also represents the Asia-Pacific region on the Executive Council of the International Insurance Society.
"Edward brings deep insurance expertise, extensive international experience and a strong track record of growing businesses and strengthening market positions. His understanding of customers and distribution, together with his experience across insurance and wealth, will be highly relevant as he works with our market leadership teams to build on the strong foundations of our businesses and accelerate their next phase of growth."

The companies involved
AIA Group is a major pan-Asian life insurance group with a presence in 18 markets. It provides life insurance, accident and health insurance, and savings plans to individuals and corporate clients. The Group is a significant player in the Asia-Pacific region, often competing with other global giants for market share in emerging economies like India and established markets like Australia. Moncreiffe’s background at HSBC—specifically as CEO of Insurance—highlights the interconnectedness of the banking and insurance sectors in the region, particularly in the bancassurance and wealth management segments where AIA maintains a strong foothold.
HSBC’s insurance arm, which Moncreiffe previously led, oversees life and health insurance businesses across multiple global territories, including the Chinese Mainland and Singapore. This move represents a significant talent transfer between two of the most influential financial institutions operating in the Asian insurance landscape. AIA is distinguished in the market by its long-term commitment to Asia and its focus on enterprise-wide strategic priorities that aim to deliver value for partners and shareholders alike.
What this means from an insurtech perspective
This move highlights the increasing value of leadership that can bridge the gap between traditional life insurance and modern wealth management distribution. For insurtech vendors and incumbent carriers, Moncreiffe’s appointment signals that AIA is doubling down on distribution efficiency and market penetration in high-growth regions like India. The industry is currently under pressure to modernize legacy core systems to support more agile product launches; a leader with Moncreiffe’s background in complex, multi-regional operations will likely prioritize digital integration to lower loss ratios and improve customer trust through more transparent, data-driven underwriting. This transition places pressure on regional competitors to secure similar high-level talent capable of navigating diverse regulatory environments.
